United Arab Emirates Design as development tool: EU project holds conference on role of design in developing creative industries

The EU-funded project Creative Mediterranean (Development of Clusters in Cultural and Creative Industries in the Southern Mediterranean) organised a conference entitled “Design as Development tool” last week in Nabeul, Tunisia. More than 300 persons attended the event, mostly students, but also junior designers, experts, teachers and craftsmen.
The conference, animated by Giulio Vinaccia, one of the designers of the project, awarded by the Compasso d’Oro 2016, addressed the following points:
- The role of the designers within the enterprises and their responsibilities towards society
- The difference between art and design
- The collaboration between designers and craftsmen and the important question of the property of the developed collections –which is always the craftsmen’s one
- The perpetuation of the collaboration between designers and craftsmen
The project’s team took this opportunity to present the Design HUB to be soon implemented by UNIDO in Nabeul. This HUB will be a co-working area, provided by the National Office for Handicraft in Tunisia (ONA in French) which will enable designers, craftsmen, students, and workers from the cultural and creative industries to work together to develop new projects and collections. These actors will also have access to resources and sources of inspiration such as image banks of objects produced according the region’s cultural heritages, as well as conferences and workshops designed to give craftsmen and designers the means to develop news collections, improve their productions, develop their branding and marketing identity, etc.
The objective of the Development of Clusters in Cultural and Creative Industries in the Southern Mediterranean project (Creative Mediterranean), implemented in the framework of the Private sector Development in the Southern Mediterranean Programme, is to foster entrepreneurial co-operation in the cultural and creative industry notably through the promotion of promising pilot initiatives demonstrating contribution to inclusive growth. The project then aims at demonstrating the potential for the national and regional development of cultural and creative industries in the Southern Mediterranean, thus opening the possibility through adequate replication and larger scale support from financial institutions to promote new employment opportunities and inclusive growth in the region.
