‘FOSTEr in MED’, a project funded by the ENPI CBC Med Programme, announced on 8 February 2016, the launch of a pilot project in integrated photovoltaics ‘Building-Integrated Photovoltaic technology (BIPV)’.The project is directed by the Industrial Research Institute at the Hadat campus of the Lebanese University in Beirut.
IEVP CT Med, a cross-border cooperation programme, funded by the EU, underlines the interest in it. It noted on its website that Lebanon needs new and renewable energy: this country, it reminds us, is “ranked in 23rd position on the global list of the 25 countries most dependent on fossil fuels for the production of energy”. 97% of its energy needs are covered by foreign purchases.
Lebanon, “bathed by the sun the whole year, has enormous potential for the development of solar energy. The project ‘FOSTEr in MED’ aims thus to contribute to the energy diversification” of its needs, notably solar, according to a method of “decentralised” production. The pilot project will utilise “building-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV), which consists of the integration of solar modules as architectural elements”.
‘FOSTEr in MED’ further notes that “building-integrated photovoltaic systems are still, very underused in the Mediterranean countries”.
