Speak Up Arena is the MENA region’s boldest new debate tournament, organised by EU MedBridge, the regional communication programme of the European Commission’s Directorate General for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf (DG MENA).  Speak Up Arena promotes the art of constructive debate. It is not about shouting louder; it is about arguing smarter. We are seeking young voices from across the MENA region who are ready to defend big ideas with passion, wit and conviction.

Who Can Apply?

This call is open to all young people (18 – 30 years) from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia.

Key Dates

  • Date of Launch: 03 April
  • Deadline: 03 May

What’s the challenge?

Produce a one-minute video presenting a compelling argument for or against one of the ten statements. The candidate may also choose to take on the voice of a well-known historical or public figure and let them speak on their behalf.

The 10 Statements

  1. We should slow economic growth to protect the planet.
  2. Without strong action, the Mediterranean will not be livable by 2050.
  3. Tourism is harming Mediterranean coasts.
  4. Children under 16 should not use social media.
  5. Privacy no longer exists. We should accept it.
  6. Traditional exams/diplomas are outdated.
  7. Protecting heritage is pure nostalgia.
  8. Unpaid internships exploit young people.
  9. We can make jokes about absolutely everything.
  10. Influencers cannot be trusted.

What’s next?

The strongest candidates will move on to national debate rounds. One top participant per country will then advance to the semi-finals, competing in teams, followed by a high-profile regional grand final bringing together the region’s most persuasive young voices.
