United Arab Emirates Tunisia: Nobel laureates received at EESC seminar

On Thursday, 21 January, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held a seminar on “the role of an organised civil society in the democratic transition process: the example of Tunisia,” which was attended by members of the ‘Tunisian Quartet of National Dialogue’, the winner of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. The seminar was held on the sidelines of the EESC’s annual session.
The Nobel Prize “emphasizes the importance of civil society organisations”, George Dassis, president of the Committee, said in his opening address at the seminar.
Mr. Dassis noted that, “in its relations with neighbouring countries, it is important that the EU address its partners on the southern shore as equals and it is crucial that civil society be involved.” He said that the EESC was working on drafting a ‘notice’ on the revision of the neighbourhood policy that emphasises the duty to involve civil society in the EU’s policy towards its southern neighbours.
Mr. Dassis referred to concerns about security issues and migration. “While it is clear that the stabilisation of the region and its security are important priorities, they should not be made at the expense of its economic and social development and by lessening respect for values such as human rights and democracy”, he said.
