As part of its activities, the Lebanon Reforestation Initiative (LRI), SIMMER’s partner in Lebanon, organised the first national stakeholder workshop on 27th March 2026, together with the Lebanese Civil Defence. The workshop focused on the project’s cross-country gap analysis. Within SIMMER, the Lebanon Reforestation Initiative leads the work on identifying and validating the needs of wildfire management stakeholders across six Mediterranean countries. This includes mapping key actors, assessing institutional readiness, and reviewing legal and operational frameworks.

The workshop brought together public authorities, scientists, NGOs, and operational responders. Participants shared current practices, tools, and challenges in wildfire management. The results will feed into a regional inventory of scientific tools, legal frameworks, and operational protocols.

Despite the ongoing war and difficult conditions, the LRI team delivered a strong and impactful hybrid session. This is the first step in a series of national workshops in Jordan, Palestine, France, Greece, and Cyprus. A final partners’ workshop will follow to consolidate results and support a coordinated, science-based approach to wildfire management. The SIMMER project is now entering a key phase, six months after its launch, with a clear focus on strengthening wildfire prevention, response, and restoration across the Mediterranean.
