United Arab Emirates Mogherini drives forward Syria initiative in Davos

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini undertook two days of intensive diplomacy at the Davos World Economic Forum, also on her EU Regional Initiative on the future of Syria.
The initiative, launched late last year, aims to identify with regional partners common ground on the post-conflict arrangements for Syria and examine the scope for reconciliation and reconstruction once a credible political transition is firmly under way.
Among a number of meetings she held, the High Representative met Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq, the new Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al Safadi, and the UN special envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura.
Mogherini also took part in panels on the ‘Responsible leadership in a multipolar world’, and on ‘Promoting stability in the Middle East’ and in a public discussion with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on ‘Redefining Europe’s Security Agenda’.
Mogherini had in Davos a meeting also on Tunisia with Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and with the leader of the party Ennahda, Rached Ghannouchi.
Migration and human rights were the topics of her meetings with the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Salil Shetty, and with UN High commissioner for refugees, Filippo Grandi.
