Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment in Morocco

Team Europe Initiative on Gender Equality in Morocco (2021–2027)

Overall Objective

This programme aims to contribute to the economic and social empowerment of women in Morocco by fostering a cultural and social environment conducive to their full development.

Specific Objectives

Lot 1: Challenge and reduce the stereotypes, discrimination and socio-cultural norms that limit the participation and empowerment of women and girls.

Lot 2: Promote the economic and social empowerment of women and girls, particularly those in vulnerable situations, through effective advocacy, strengthened public policies and societal mobilisation.

Lot 3: Make sport a driver of equality and inclusion in Morocco.

Thematic Priorities

  • Strengthen access for women and girls, including the most vulnerable, to information — while encouraging them to actively contribute to producing information that reflects their realities and needs.

Lot 1 — Stereotypes, discrimination and socio-cultural norms that limit the participation and empowerment of women and girls are challenged

  • Engage men and boys, and society as a whole, to create an environment in which the voices of women and girls can be heard, both in public life and in everyday settings.
  • Raise awareness among and engage local communities and key stakeholders (religious leaders, community leaders, local authorities, political parties, education actors, etc.) in the fight against stereotypes, gender-based discrimination, and harmful socio-cultural norms and practices.

Lot 2 — The economic and social empowerment of women and girls, particularly those in vulnerable situations, is promoted through effective advocacy, strengthened public policies and societal mobilisation

  • Generate robust evidence on gender-based discrimination and present it to decision-makers to inform public policy reform.
  • Strengthen the effectiveness of media and cultural initiatives in tackling gender stereotypes and harmful socio-cultural norms.

Lot 3 — Sport becomes a driver of equality and inclusion in Morocco

  • Tackle the barriers that prevent women and girls from accessing physical activity.
  • Facilitate access to inclusive sport for women and girls, both within institutional settings (e.g. physical education classes in primary and secondary schools) and through community-based and extracurricular activities.
  • Develop sport as a vehicle for gender equality by fostering the active participation and leadership of women and girls, and by helping to shift social norms.
