Marking Europe Day, the May edition of 3Q Talks brings together a series of conversations with EU ambassadors, highlighting partnerships, shared priorities, and future opportunities across the region. In this edition, Patrick Simonnet reflects on the European Union’s partnership with Yemen and its focus on supporting people through humanitarian assistance, development, and peace efforts. Drawing on decades of diplomatic experience across the Middle East and Africa, he also shares his perspective on the meaning of Europe Day, the importance of dialogue and cooperation, and the role young Yemenis can play in shaping a more stable and hopeful future.

  • What does the EU’s partnership with Yemen look like today, and what are the key areas of cooperation that have the most direct impact on people’s lives?

The EU’s partnership with Yemen focuses on supporting the Yemeni people through one of the most challenging periods in the country’s recent history. Our engagement combines humanitarian assistance, development support, and efforts to advance peace. We believe it is essential to support the Government of Yemen in enacting urgent reforms. In practical terms, this involves helping to keep essential services running, supporting education and livelihoods, and strengthening local institutions. The EU also works with partners to improve food security, livelihoods, and access to basic services. At the same time, we remain committed to supporting a peaceful, inclusive political process under UN auspices. Ultimately, our aim is to help create the conditions for stability, recovery, and long-term development.

  • Europe Day marks a moment of reflection on peace and unity. What does this date mean in the context of EU-Yemen relations, and why is it relevant for young people in Yemen?

Europe Day serves as a reminder of how cooperation can transform a region once marked by conflict into one founded on peace, partnership, and shared prosperity. For us, it is not only about Europe’s history but also about what that peace can offer in today’s world. In the context of EU-Yemen relations, the day underscores the importance we place on peace, dialogue, unity, and inclusivity. Yemen, like many countries in the region, has a young population with a strong desire for stability, greater opportunities, and a voice in shaping the future of their own country. For young people, Europe Day carries a simple message: change is possible. The European Union itself is the result of countries choosing cooperation over conflict. That same spirit of working together across differences is what we seek to support in our partnership with Yemen.

  • If you could speak directly to young people in Yemen, what would you want them to know about the EU, and what message of encouragement would you share?

I want young people in Yemen to know that the European Union stands with them, not only in responding to urgent needs, but equally in supporting their aspirations for a better future. The EU believes strongly in the role of young people as drivers of positive change. Through our programmes, we aim to support education, skills development and opportunities that help young Yemenis realise their potential. Your voices matter, and your ideas are essential to shaping Yemen’s future. Despite challenges, you have shown incredible resilience, creativity and talent. Investing in these strengths will be key to building a more stable, inclusive and prosperous Yemen.
