The MEDWISE project is promoting a new approach to waste management in Palestine by advancing circular economy principles that transform waste from a burden into a valuable resource. Rather than focusing solely on disposal, MEDWISE supports resource efficiency, waste recovery, and the reintegration of materials into productive economic cycles.

The project aims to accelerate the transition toward a circular and resource-efficient economy across the Mediterranean region, including Palestine, through innovative and practical solutions. Key interventions include enhancing waste sorting and recovery systems, promoting decentralized composting solutions, supporting industrial symbiosis initiatives where waste from one sector becomes a resource for another, and fostering knowledge exchange and innovation across borders.

For Palestine, transitioning from a traditional linear model of “take, make, dispose” to a circular economy requires systemic change. This includes strengthening waste segregation at source, supporting recycling ecosystems, enabling SMEs working in resource recovery, raising awareness of sustainable consumption practices, and aligning local approaches with international environmental standards.

As part of the MEDWISE project, Leaders International for Economic Development plays a central role in translating circular economy concepts into practical, locally relevant solutions. Through its work in Palestine, Leaders International contributes to data collection and analysis of waste streams, stakeholder mapping within the waste management ecosystem, and the advancement of industrial symbiosis opportunities that can transform waste and by-products into valuable economic inputs.

These efforts provide the foundation for future implementation phases and support the development of sustainable business models that reduce waste, recover resources, and create economic opportunities. By embracing circular approaches, Palestine can strengthen environmental resilience, reduce pressure on municipal systems, and unlock new pathways for sustainable development.
