Yemen PPRD South to highlight role of cooperation in disaster management at closing event

The EU-funded PPRD SOUTH II (Prevention, Preparedness, and Response to natural and man-made Disasters) programme is holding its closing ceremony on 20 July in Brussels, wrapping up 3 years of civil protection cooperation with the Southern Mediterranean partner countries. The event, to be held under the theme “When disasters do not have borders, only cooperation can make a difference”, will be an opportunity to highlight the importance of cooperation in disaster management, particularly with new emerging threats.
It will include two conferences focusing on:
• The role of civil protection when facing multiple threats and mass casualties management, including terrorism attacks and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks, with examples from Algeria and France.
• Medical and public health preparedness and response facing CBRN risks. During this conference, CBRN Centre of Excellence (CBRN CoE) initiative in the Middle East, North Africa and Sahel region will be presented and a focus on two CBRN CoE projects will be proposed to participants.
The closing ceremony will also present the results of the three-year PPRD South II programme, the current and emerging challenges and opportunities at regional level. It will also present the state of play and the way forward concerning the Host Nation Support (HNS).
PPRD South II (Prevention, Preparedness, and Response to natural and man-made Disasters) is a three-year programme with a €5 million budget which aims at raising national resilience of southern Mediterranean partner countries (targeted by the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP)) affected by a natural or man-made disaster, mainly through risk reduction (prevention, mitigation, public awareness) and preparedness (capacity building, contingency planning), including better cooperation at the international level.
