Yemen Palestinian national strategy for culture: moving from theory to practice

The EU-funded programme Med Culture held the second meeting of the Palestine National Focus Group yesterday in Ramallah. The meeting aimed at bringing support to existing initiatives and to build on a growing awareness among Palestinian civil society cultural actors and respective authorities of the importance of coordinating their efforts for a better management of existing resources.
National Focus Group members discussed the possibilities to put into action two objectives of the National Strategy for Culture that are compatible with Med Culture’s scope of work and implementation period (2016-2017).
The National Focus Group is composed of Palestinian cultural practitioners from diverse disciplines, as well as representatives of three Palestinian ministries. It works closely with Med Culture on identifying activities aimed at developing the cultural sector in Palestine, in addition to taking part in Med Culture regional capacity enhancement activities.
Med Culture is an EU-funded regional programme with the aim of sustaining the creation of institutional and social environments propitious to culture as a vector for freedom of expression and sustainable development. This should be accomplished by reinforcing the capacities of the public and private cultural sectors as vectors for democratisation, and economic and social development for societies in the Southern Mediterranean.
Med Culture is part of the regional programme “Media and culture for development in the Southern Mediterranean” which has been allocated a total budget of €17 million over a four-year period, of which €9 million is for the award of grants on a co-financing basis, and €8 million for one capacity-development mechanism on media (Med Media) and one capacity development mechanism on culture (Med Culture).
