To mark International Women’s Day, on 8 March, several European Commissioners, among them the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and the Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, “joined their voices to call for more gender equality within the European Union”, according to a press statement issued to mark this symbolic day.
In the statement they said: “Today we celebrate women. We celebrate their role in society, at work, in our families and lives. We also remember their suffering, hardship and injustice, which for many is still a reality today. It is also true that we must promote gender equality not just today, on International Women’s Day, but every day”.
