At the 2025 World Power-to-X Summit in Marrakech, the MED-GEM Network took part as an Institutional Partner in a high-level session addressing one of the greatest challenges of the energy transition: decarbonising long-distance transport across air, sea, and road. Moderated by Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, Deputy Team Leader of the MED-GEM Network, the discussion brought together leading experts from the shipping, port, automotive, and energy sectors to explore whether Power-to-X solutions – such as e-fuels and hydrogen derivatives – can scale rapidly enough to transform global transport.

Speakers noted that the shipping industry has taken its first steps with methanol-fuelled vessels but that scaling production will require aligning Morocco’s renewable potential with global supply chains. Ports were identified as key hydrogen gateways, while predictable regulatory frameworks – including EU quotas and IMO rules – will be critical to building reliable markets. Experts also stressed that aviation and maritime transport will rely primarily on sustainable e-fuels, positioning Morocco as a strategic hub through R&D platforms such as the Green Energy Park.

The debate further underlined that Power-to-X must not only serve export goals but also create local socio-economic value by linking renewable production to domestic markets. The session concluded that the main challenge now lies in establishing harmonised frameworks to attract investment and enable large-scale deployment. As Institutional Partner, the MED-GEM Network reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue between the European Union, Moroccan stakeholders, and international industry leaders to advance sustainable and integrated energy solutions across the Mediterranean.
