As part of the EU-Morocco Green Partnership signed in October 2022, a delegation of four European Union Directorates-General visited Rabat and Casablanca on 5 and 6 June 2023, to strengthen political dialogue with institutional partners and the private sector in Morocco. This dialogue focuses on major issues: energy, the agriculture-water nexus, green finance and the circular economy.
Both partners are stepping up discussions in order to support the transition towards a decarbonised, resilient and inclusive economy. They are laying the groundwork for close cooperation in promising sectors such as renewable energies and green hydrogen, in line with the EU Global Gateway strategy, which is being rolled out in various areas including climate and energy.
The Green Partnership is already translating into action. During his official visit to Morocco, European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi signed the “Green Land” programme, in support of two domestic strategies, namely “Green Generation” (agriculture) and “Forests of Morocco” (forestry). With €115 million in funding, the programme will support research and development, training and support/mentoring for sustainable, resilient and inclusive management of agricultural and forest ecosystems in the Kingdom. In addition to this, Morocco and the EU will shortly sign new cooperation initiatives in the fields of green energy, the circular economy and the decarbonation of industry.
Study visits and topical discussions between Morocco and the EU also take place on a regular basis, with the aim of sharing best practices in areas such as water management, renewable energies, energy efficiency, biodiversity and green finance.
