Under the EU-funded Green Forward Industry (GFI) project, UNIDO is preparing a circular economy demonstration pilot on batteries in Morocco, and is looking for a service provider to explore the technical, market, regulatory and investment conditions for circular battery business models, with an eye on domestic value addition and on the sustainability requirements of export markets, in particular the European Union. The findings will inform the design of the demonstration pilot, which will be tendered separately.

Over eight months, and in close dialogue with national stakeholders, the selected team will map battery material flows and market opportunities, compare the recovery technologies best suited to Morocco and draw lessons from the EU and other battery-producing economies. Building on this, it will propose policy options that can support circular battery business models, and close with a pre-feasibility study for a battery collection and processing facility, including a financial model and an assessment of its environmental, social and economic impact.

We are looking for teams that bring hands-on battery know-how and policy thinking together. That means experience in Li-ion battery value chains, manufacturing scrap, pre-treatment and the recovery of critical raw materials, combined with a solid grasp of extended producer responsibility, waste classification and the EU Battery Regulation, and the ability to turn all of this into a sound investment case. Bidders need at least seven years of proven experience, a French-speaking team with English- and Arabic-speaking members, and at least one team member based in Morocco. Consortia combining international and Moroccan companies are encouraged.
